I just ran a second marathon (May 2, 2010) in Rhode Island.
I did not finish this marathon because it was to warm, my compression socks were to tight, my leg cramped up a little to much even though I was trying to comsume more water. Also my Under Armor short were to short and kept riding up my inner thighs. This made my abductor muscles sore and swollened. I was really determined to finish this marathon after not finishing the 1st one in October 2009. I made it to 20 miles 5 miles further than the October marathon. The October marathon the weather was louzy - a North Easter storm. Cold wind driven rain.
Hopefully I will be able to finish my next marathon later this year (October). It is alway good to write down what went write and wrong in your training log from fuel to clothing. Just do it and keep trying if it does not work out the first time.

Thanks for the courageous story. Even in my own hometown, I couldn't finish my most favorite marathon:

It's great, isn't it? I think it's my favourite part of running: just going anywhere, without thinking how many miles exactly i want to do that day. I love to run on new routes and get to know my surroundings that way. the dangerous part (or the thrilling part) is that once i get somewhere, i realize that now i need to head back, so sometimes there's a lot more walking involved on the way home!

So great to read how you found something so freeing. I'm just getting back into running, but I remember the feeling of just wanting to leave the house and run!

Thanks, Scotty! I'm still running in my good old baggy pants, but I'm preparing for the big jump in a few days... I hope we can break the ice quickly and bypass the awkward stage.

I'm super excited about the marathon, just can't wait to run around this lake! 4 weeks to go :)

Thanks, Jarkko. I decided to be this open because this is simply what happened - I didn't finish the marathon, but as you said: it's not the end of the world and I keep running. It's tempting for me to beat myself up now, after 6 weeks, and say i could've finished, when my feet healed and I have analyzed my mistakes. But all I can do now is focus on the next race and be better prepared to deal with challenges on the road. Live and learn :)

Lots of strength on your race in September!

I'm glad you were this open about not finishing. This somehow makes it easier to think about starting my first marathon in a month and a half: even though, just like you, I'm not planning to quit, it's good to hear what that it's not the end of the world if you don't finish...

Good luck on your next race! This time, I'm sure you'll make it to the end!

Thank you, Vaishnav, now I know what to expect, although I realize that each marathon is a different experience with new challenges, and rewards too. If I'm prepared to run in bad conditions (heat, rain, wind, pain, etc), I will make it to the finish line, and in style :)

Good luck with your training, I'm sure you'll reach your time goal!
